Har Har Mahadev. For Shiva devotees across Gujarat and Kutch, the Kedarnath Yatra is not just a pilgrimage — it is the pilgrimage. The ancient stone temple at 3,583 metres, the roar of the Mandakini river below, the snowcapped peaks on every side — Kedarnath is raw, powerful, and profoundly moving. But it is also demanding, and proper preparation is what makes the difference between a life-changing journey and a stressful one.
Why Kedarnath is Perfect for Gujarat Families
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the most sacred Shiva shrines in India. For families from Kutch and Saurashtra where Shiva devotion runs deep, this is not a destination, it is a calling. The temple itself dates back centuries and survived the 2013 floods with its sanctum intact — many devotees see this as divine protection.
The journey combines spiritual significance with raw Himalayan beauty. Even the trek itself — through pine forests, alongside mountain streams, past dozens of smaller shrines — is a meditative experience. We have taken hundreds of families from Gandhidham on this pilgrimage, and without exception, every person returns changed.
Best Time to Visit from Gandhidham / Kutch
Kedarnath temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April–May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (October–November). Exact dates are announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee each year.
- May–June: Most popular. All facilities open. Weather pleasant (8–18°C at temple). Roads fully operational. Book at least 60 days in advance.
- September–October: Quieter, clear skies after monsoon, stunning views. Excellent for families who want a calmer experience. Our personal recommendation.
- Avoid July–August: Monsoon season. Heavy rain causes landslides. Many road closures. Helicopter services frequently cancelled. We do not run Kedarnath batches in this window.
October is Kedarnath at its finest — the monsoon has washed everything clean, the crowds have thinned, and on clear days you can see all the way to the high Himalayan peaks. If you have flexibility, choose October.
Top Things to Do at Kedarnath
- Kedarnath Temple Darshan: The main event. The evening aarti inside the temple is extraordinary — oil lamps, chants, and the ancient linga of Shiva. Arrive early morning or late evening to avoid peak queues.
- Bhairavnath Temple: A short walk from the main temple. Bhairavnath is the guard deity of Kedarnath and is worshipped before departure.
- Shankaracharya Samadhi: Behind the main temple, where Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have attained samadhi. A deeply sacred spot.
- The Trek Itself: The 16-km path from Gaurikund is lined with waterfalls, small dhams, and mountain villages. Even those who take the helicopter should walk at least part of this route.
- Vasuki Tal: A high-altitude glacial lake 8 km from the temple, for those who want an extra day and a more adventurous experience.
- Gauri Kund: The sacred hot spring tank at the base of the trek, associated with Goddess Parvati. A ritual dip before the ascent is customary.

Budget Guide: How Much Does It Cost?
Our 6-night Kedarnath package from Gandhidham is priced at approximately ₹18,000–₹24,000 per person depending on train class, group size, and accommodation category. This includes return train tickets, all road transfers, accommodation, all meals by our Kutchi chefs, puja arrangements, pony and doli bookings at Gaurikund (for those who need them), and a dedicated guide throughout.
Helicopter booking at Kedarnath is approximately ₹3,500–₹4,500 per person each way and is recommended for senior family members. We strongly advise booking this well in advance as seats are limited and sell out fast during peak season.
Why Book with Rajal Tourism from Gandhidham
The Kedarnath journey requires experience, not just enthusiasm. High altitude, mountain roads, unpredictable weather, and the physical demands of the trek all need to be managed carefully. We have been doing this for 15 years. Our drivers know these mountain roads in all conditions. Our Kutchi chefs cook hot, fresh food even at base camp near Gaurikund. Vikas bhai has personally done the Kedarnath trek multiple times.
We never rush the group. We always have a medical kit and portable oxygen on every vehicle. For families with senior members, we pre-arrange all mobility assistance well before departure — not on the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the Kedarnath trek possible for elderly family members?A: Yes, with proper arrangements. Pony and doli (palanquin carried by porters) are available from Gaurikund throughout the trekking season. Helicopter services from Phata, Sirsi, and Guptkashi are also available. We pre-book all of these as part of our package for any family members who need them.
Q: How should we prepare for altitude at Kedarnath?A: Kedarnath is at 3,583m — a major jump from sea-level Kutch. We include an overnight at Haridwar and another at Guptkashi in our itinerary specifically for gradual acclimatisation. Consult your doctor about Diamox tablets before travel. On the trek day, drink plenty of water, walk slowly, and do not compare your pace to others.
Q: What should we carry for the trek?A: Warm layers (even in May it can drop to 5°C at the temple), comfortable trekking shoes with ankle support, a rain poncho, a small daypack, ORS sachets, personal medications, and dry snacks. Leave your main luggage at the base hotel — you only need a light bag for the trek.
Q: Can we do Kedarnath as a standalone trip without the full Char Dham?A: Absolutely. Our standalone Kedarnath package from Gandhidham is very popular with families who have limited time but want this one specific pilgrimage. We also offer a Kedarnath + Badrinath (Do Dham) combination.
Kedarnath is a journey you owe yourself and your family. If it has been on your spiritual wishlist, do not wait another year. Call or WhatsApp Vikas bhai on +91 98797 43111 to check 2026 departure dates and helicopter availability. Jai Bholenath!
